17 DOLPHINED DOLPHINS APPEAR IN OYAMBRE, OF WHICH 14 ARE DEAD

The cold and rainy morning has brought an unusual and unprecedented stamp on the Cantabrian beaches. First thing in the morning there were ten dolphins that were dead on the sand of Oyambre, in the Cantabrian municipality of San Vicente de la Barquera, and at least five others still had life; but in the early afternoon the worst predictions were confirmed: fourteen cetaceans lay dead and only managed to return three alive to the water.
Natural Environment Agents with a group of surfers and local residents tried by all means to bring alive cetaceans to shore, but the action became more than difficult because the waves dragged them back to the sand.
The General Directorate of the Natural Environment of the regional government has proceeded to the withdrawal of the deceased specimens, which have been transferred to the Wildlife Recovery Center, located in Villaescusa, to proceed with their necropsy in order to determine the causes of their death .
The operation involved veterinary staff of the aforementioned center, agents of the Natural Environment and personnel of the Directorate General of Fisheries of the regional government, and the assistance provided by the surfers who were in the area has been fundamental. All this before the eyes of dozens of curious in the area who have witnessed the scene.

The listed dolphins are a common species in the waters of the Cantabrian Sea and this type of behavior in these animals is often frequent, according to the Government in a statement.

Other cases this winter

Last February, a five-and-a-half-meter long whale was found dead on the beach of Ris (Noja) after the tide dragged it to the sand. As explained by the Councilor for the Environment, Javier Martín, the cetacean presented multiple injuries caused “probably after hitting the rocks of this beach, but everything points to this has not been the cause of his death.”
From March until May 8, the bodies of another thirteen dolphins arrived dead on the coast of Cantabria and beached on their beaches. At the same time, a rorcual was found alive on the Santander beach of Bikini and a seal on Ajo, which were returned to their natural environment.
